A few weeks ago I wrote about BBC Two’s docudrama The Girl which explores Hitchcock’s obsession with The Birds star, Tippi Hedren. Fox Searchlight has decided to take a look into the mind of the Master of Suspense as well with a film titled Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho on the rise. Quietly, Searchlight has been casting for their upcoming film for a few months now and they have just added another name to the long list of talented actors. The film is about exactly what the title implies and is based on the non-fiction book written by Stephen Rebello that follows Hitchcock at the height of his game as a film director. With his success he decided to make a “lowly” horror film that basically no studio wanted anything to do with it. Upon hearing this, Hitchcock pulled together the financing for the film by himself. In doing so he created one of his biggest hits and one of the most influential horror films of all time.
“They’ll see and they’ll know, and they’ll say, Why, she wouldn’t even harm a fly.”
It may seem strange to make a film about making a film but the story behind creating Psycho is quite interesting. Paramount hated the idea of this film which is where the problems started for Hitchcock. He was originally slated to direct No Bail For the Judge with Audrey Hepburn but when she got pregnant they had to throw those plans out the window. Because of this, Hitchcock moved on to Psycho and the studio was so against him making this film that they gave him a useless budget and resources, basically making him build his own sets and utilize actors from his TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents. So you see, getting this film made was much more difficult than people realize.
Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho looks to be a fascinating film not only about one of cinemas most influential directors but it’s also an in depth look into the making of the horror film that started it all, Psycho. With an all-star cast to back it up, this film is shaping up to be one that any fan of Hitchcock or the horror genre in general won’t want to miss. Check out the cast below.
UPDATE: The title of the film has been changed to a much simpler, Hitchcock.
Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh
Jessica Biel as Vera Miles
Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock
Helen Mirren as Alma Reville (Hitchcock’s wife)
James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins
As always, thanks for reading.
