Maniac Cop Prequel

This is some fantastic news regarding the prequel to the cult film Maniac Cop. I was never a huge fan of Maniac Cop but hearing about Nicolas Winding Refn getting onboard for the prequel is extremely exciting news. Refn is the man behind easily one of my favorite films of last year, Drive, and now finding out that he is going to be involved in the re-emerging franchise is very awesome. Unfortunately, as of right now Refn is not directing the film, instead he will be producing.  Part of the reason why the original film never really did anything for many horror fans is because the mood and style of it that the filmmakers originally aimed for was never met, but with a man like Refn suiting up for the prequel only promises great things.

“In an exclusive interview with both William Lustig and Larry Cohen, DG has learned that Nicolas Winding Refn is going to be joining Lustig as a producer of the new film. ‘It’s going to be more a prequel than anything else, I am really excited to come back to this world especially since Nick is going to be a part of it’ said Cohen. ‘Nick (Winding Refn) has been talking to us about it for a while now and I had an idea that would work so we’re going to do it.’ Cohen said that the film will still maintain the noir-ish comic book feel of the first three films but ‘with a bigger budget than the others have had.'”

There is a chance that Refn could actually end up directing this film, which would really secure every possible chance of this being insanely awesome but as of right now he will only be producing, which isn’t such a bad thing either because producers have a lot of say in the final product. It’s really cool to see an A-List director like Refn take a shot at a genre film such as Maniac Cop. Now if only Refn could get Gosling on board.

As always, thanks for reading.

    1. Well you haven’t really missed much, I always thought the films were kind of lame. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to check it out before seeing this prequel though.

  1. I’d much, much rather see him and Gosling re-team for an update of LOGAN’S RUN, (one of the few remakes I actually want Hollywood to do), which they’ve both been attached to.

    1. That’s an amazing idea, I totally agree. If hollywood insists on remakes I’d like to see them do movies like Logan’s Run instead of Maniac Cop but you take what you can get right.
