The Missing Reel

Here is a compilation of some of the stuff that mattered to me this week whether it be good or bad. This week on The Missing Reel we take a look at some great new horror posters, the new trailer for Sinister, Hugh Laurie nabs an interesting villainous role and much more. Enjoy.

‘Treachery’ Debuts Poster

The Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens) starring horror film Treachery is a great looking thriller from director Travis Romero. The film “captures the controversy between Henry and his estranged son, Nathan. Reunited at a friend’s small wedding party in a remote cabin, Henry and Nathan have their usual awkward interactions. Nathan, accompanied by his girlfriend Cecilia, seeks his father’s approval. Cecilia’s presence only adds to Henry’s discomfort, forcing him to want to leave, but a storm hits, trapping them in the cabin and headed for the worst along with the rest of the group. None of them really realize what is truly in store.

 Anthology Horror Film ‘V/H/S’ Poster

I’ve written a little bit about the anthology film V/H/S which was a huge success at the Sundance Film Festival and they have just released this fantastic looking poster for the film. In the film, “a group of misfits hired to burglarise a house to find a rare VHS tape, only to find more found footage than they wanted to see.” I love seeing that the horror anthology genre seems to be making its long awaited return with films like this, Trick ‘R Treat, and The ABC’s of Death getting a ton of appreciation from horror fans. The directing talent involved with this film is fantastic with directors like Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence.

Look for V/H/S on VOD on August 31st of this year and a follow up theater run October 5th. Check out the poster.

‘Sinister’ Trailer

The first trailer for the much anticipated horror film Sinister has just been released by Summit Entertainment. This supernatural horror flick starring Ethan Hawke is directed by Scott Derrickson who is best known for his film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

“A true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernaturalhorror.” The trailer is pretty effective and definitely looks creepy. The story however looks very been there done that. You can expect to see this film in theaters on October 5th. Watch the trailer below.

‘Branded’ Poster

Do you guys remember the absolutely crazy looking trailer for Branded that released not too long ago? Well if you missed it you can check it out here: Branded Trailer. There is now a new poster for the film and it compliments the trailer very well in terms of being ridiculous.

The film “is a dark and mind-bending sci-fi thriller into a surreal, dystopian society where mega corporations have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man’s quest to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world.” Check it out.

Mondo Releases Vinyl of ‘The Beyond’ Soundtrack

You gotta love Mondo, these guys know exactly how to make fans of horror drool all over themselves. What is considered to a lot of people to be Lucio Fulci’s best film, The Beyond is a classic by every meaning of the word when it comes to Italian horror. The film released back in 1981 and has ever since gained cult status for its amazing murder scenes and insane visuals. An interesting thing about this film is that its soundtrack has never gotten the kind of release that it deserved but thanks to Mondo they are changing all of that.

Mondo has announced that they will be selling a limited edition vinyl pressing of the classic score done by Fabio Frizzi. Mondo states: “We’ve long been fans of Italian horror soundtracks, and The Beyond is one of the first I can remember latching onto. Frizzi’s work is the perfect backdrop to faces being melted by acid. We tried to treat the pressing with the utmost respect, we hope you enjoy it.”

Its truly amazing, check out the pictures below.

Hugh Laurie To Play Villian In ‘Robocop’

This isn’t necessarily horror related but it is very cool nonetheless. For MGM’s upcoming remake of Robocop it looks like Hugh Laurie has gotten the role as the villain. From The Hollywood Reporter,“Laurie will play the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, the company that makes Robocop.

This is definitely an interesting choice of remakes but one that I am looking forward to. The cast is shaping up very nicely and I believe Laurie is going to surprise a lot of people with a role like this because it is certainly outside of his comfort zone.

ESP Releasing A Bela Lugosi Themed Guitar

Perhaps the coolest thing ever, ESP will be releasing this Limited Edition tales from the grave guitar featuring the one and only Bela Lugosi. The guitar will be released just in time for Halloween and only 325 of these will be made so getting one will be extremely difficult which is the case for anything that is ever as cool as this. The guitar will be signed by both Bela Lugosi, Jr., and the artwork designer Kerry Gammill. It’s amazing… have a look.

The End

There you have it, some of the stuff that mattered to me this week. As always, thanks for reading and if you happened to have missed last week’s edition of The Missing Reel be sure to check it out here:

  1. That V/H/S one-sheet is a welcome change from the typical floating heads-style posters. You just know if it would’ve gotten theatrical distribution, we’d be seeing some poorly photoshop’d by-the-numbers print, but that looks like something you’d see from Mondo.

And I don’t know about you, but I think I’d want the Lugosi coffin more than the ax.

    1. Oh for sure, the dreaded floating heads posters drive me crazy. It’s definitely one of the better posters I’ve seen that hasn’t come from Mondo in quite a while. Lol I was actually thinking that when I saw the picture, the coffin is amazing.

  2. It may look been there, done that, but Sinister still looks pretty damn cool. Also, for someone who loved Trick ;r;; Treat V/H/S sounds right up my alley.

    1. From early reviews that I’ve seen on Sinister they have pretty much said that it has some of the scariest moments in recent memory along with great makeup done for the ghoul, it’s only downfall was the script, so I’m definitely very much looking forward to it. Trick ‘R Treat is like one of my favorite movies!
