The Missing Reel

The Missing Reel is a compilation of all things horror and what mattered throughout the week. This week was a filled with horror gold as we get to see an amazing short film called Monster Roll, a hilarious honest trailer for Paranormal Activity, the evolution of Jurassic Park’s raptor suit and much more.

‘Zombie Bounty Hunter M.D.’

Director Pirooz Kalayeh is in the early stages of development with his upcoming zombie comedy, Zombie Bounty Hunter M.D. which follows “A struggling film company begins documenting a real zombie outbreak in Orange County. After posting the first gory attacks, they are convinced they are going to be rich megastars, but Internet commenters describe the clips as “fake” and “unrealistic.” Determined to get hits by any means necessary, the production company enlists the help of a Zen priest, a soft-porn star, and a Hollywood stuntman to help them get the hits they need to survive”.

This is a fantastic and hilarious take on the genre that is very relevant today as anyone can get their moment to shine with the right viral video. These kind of original ideas don’t come around too often, but when they do, they are a breath of fresh air. This is why the film needs our help. We as horror fans can help support indy filmmakers and their passion as Zombie Bounty Hunter M.D. is currently running a campaign on Indiegogo to raise enough money to make this into a feature film. You can head over to their page with all the details on how to contribute to the project right here: Zombie Bounty Hunter M.D.

Mechanical ‘Predator Head’

Here is a behind the scenes look at a mechanical head from Fox’s Aliens vs Predator: Requiem from studioADI.

In editing these videos we realized how little footage we have of mechanical heads without skins attached. That’s because usually by the time the animatronics are done, it’s fairly late in the build schedule, so skins get put on as quickly as possible, and often at about midnight, to be ready for painting by morning. We decided to peel the head skin off the “Wolf’s” face, and show you what goes on inside a Predator’s head!”

The Evolution of a Raptor

Speaking of behind the scenes footage; take a look at this video of Stan Winston’s evolution of the iconic raptor from Jurassic Park. Of all the behind the scenes stuff that has made its way onto “The Missing Reel”, this has to be my favorite. It’s wicked seeing a dude in that suit chasing people around the warehouse. I want to be this for Halloween.

‘Monster Roll’ Short Film

Every once in a while we get a short film that is absolutely mind blowing (see Vessel). Dan Blank’s short, Monster Roll, is no different as it features a ridiculous concept of sushi chefs fighting giant sea monsters.

So far, here at Rhinos Horror, I’ve had a pretty good track record with posting short films as all the ones I’ve put up here have gotten a feature length deal with a big studio. I hope Monster Roll follows the same path because I’d love to see this one in the theater. It’s a ton of fun and extremely well made. Check it out.

Oops! Wrong Movie!

This week, a group of young unassuming children gathered at a local theater in Nottingham, England to watch Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. You can imagine their excitement when they sat down in the theater and the lights began to dim.

Well, all that went to shit when the theater “mistakenly” played Paranormal Activity 4 instead. The theater quickly fixed the mistake but not before the damage was already done. The film played long enough to show a bloody body being thrown at the camera. One of the parents was quoted saying, “Everybody just scrambled for the exits, all you could hear were children crying and screaming. Everyone was very upset.” With another parent saying,“It was only about two minutes worth of the film but it was enough to scar them for life”.

I don’t think the parents need to worry about the children being forever terrified. I think the real reason they were running was because of how bad that movie is.

‘Paranormal Activity’ Honest Trailer

While we are on the subject of Paranormal Activity, Youtubers the Screen Junkies are known for their “honest trailers” and have created this hilarious one for Paramount’s found footage horror flick. This trailer pretty much sums up my entire feelings about the franchise.

‘Silent Night’ Gets Release Date

Santa Claus is coming to town December 4th with a blu-ray release. This loose remake stars Malcolm McDowell, Jamie King, Lisa Marie, and Brendan Fehr.

McDowell and King star as a small-town sheriff and deputy on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. But with the streets full of Santas for the annual Christmas parade, the killer is hiding in plain sight. He’s made his list, checked it twice, and the naughty are going to pay with their lives.

13 Horror Classics That Every Student Should Read

Nothing beats a great horror novel during the month of October. I’m currently reading Stephen King’s Needful Things and really enjoying it so far. However, it isn’t always easy deciding which scary novel to read because there are so many out there.

OEDb has created an awesome list of 13 horror classics to read just in time for Halloween. I’ve read a handful of the novels on their list but there are definitely a few I need to catch up on. Click the link below to find out which classics made the cut! And let me know what some of your favorite horror novels are.

‘Mocking Bird Lane’ Images

NBC’s Mocking Bird Lane has hit quite a roadblock as of late. The Munsters reboot was set for a full on TV series but NBC hasn’t liked what they’ve seen so instead they have just turned it into a Halloween special. I was really looking forward to this as a series but now I’ve lost all hope as it must not be very good if NBC would axe it like that

I think what ultimately hurt this series was that they were remaking a show about monsters yet none of the characters actually resemble monsters. It’s a neat take — and like I said — one that I was actually looking forward to.

Here are a few images:

California On Halloween

Every month Youtuber KassemG takes on the locals of California by asking them simple questions. This month he talks to them about Halloween. The video is slightly NSFW, check it out below:

  1. The “Monster Roll” was awesome, kinda reminds me of “The Host”! I actually liked the Pranormal Activity movies and was looking forward to the fourth one, although I was hoping it would be a prequel to the third :/ oh well..

I haven’t read a lot of horror books, besides The Sookie Stackhouse novels if that counts haha but I did read Stephen Kings Misery when I was in high school and it terrified me for quite awhile!

    1. The Host is a great comparison to Monster Roll! Love that movie. Misery is amazing, also a great film adaptation. Kathy Bates is a terrifying lady.

  2. Haha, laughed my ass off at that Paranormal Activity trailer. “STAIRS, STAIRS, STAIRS, Sara from Lost? STAIRS!” Love their work.

California on Halloween is pretty fun shit too haha. That guy is so blunt about everything.

The raptor thing is nuts. Can’t believe they went through all that shit. Now it’s just like, “CGI ALL THE THINGS!”

    1. Hahah yea man, Screen Junkies usually make some pretty stuff. I had to add the PA trailer in there because it’s exactly how I feel about that entire franchise. Stan Winston is an absolute legend; they really don’t make movies like they used to. I’d take practical effects over cgi any day of the week!
