Animatronics is a form of special effects that isn’t utilized nearly as much as it used to be because now with all of the computer technology out there it is simply easier for filmmakers to use CGI. What makes practical effects so special is that it takes the simulated creature and gives it a physical realness that actually moves in front of the camera in real time.
Take Gustav Hoegen’s work for example. He specializes in animatronic effects and prosthetic makeup effects for TV and film and it’s absolutely jaw dropping. You can see some of his work in films like Prometheus, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Clash of the Titans, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and more. Thanks to a buddy of mine for passing this video down to me as it showcases Hoegen’s amazing work.
The video is a bit spoiler-ish for Prometheus so if you haven’t seen it yet just skip ahead a few minutes. Enjoy.
Oh man, that stuff is just gorgeous! I love old-school animatronics.
