I’ve covered Stephen King’s upcoming sequel to his masterpiece The Shining for quite some time now so I’m really excited to be sharing the cover art for the special edition printings of Doctor Sleep with you guys. The sequel will follow a now 40 year old Danny Torrance and a tribe of psychic vampires. Yea that’s right, vampires! While we still have no idea what the standard edition cover art will look like, something tells me it wont be nearly as badass as what Cemetery Dance is offering with their limited & signed editions.
Both versions of the signed editions have already sold out but you can still grab an unsigned deluxe edition as some are still available for pre-order. The plot behind the sequel is completely out of this world and totally unexpected which is what I love so much about King’s novels. He could have gone a much easier and typical route with the upcoming sequel to one of his most famous works, but instead he turned it on its head and is delivering something that no one would have ever expected. Here’s the official plot synopsis and release info:
“Cemetery Dance Publications is very pleased to announce our Deluxe Special Limited Edition of Stephen King’s new novel, Doctor Sleep.
Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever,The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.
On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.
Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”
Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.
The exclusive Cemetery Dance Special Limited Edition of Doctor Sleep by Stephen King will be published in three states, all of them printed in two colors and bound in fine materials.”
You can expect Doctor Sleep to hit shelves on September 24th. Check out the art!
HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS? And I call myself an SK fan. ~smh
Hahah no worries! You know now!
This is friggin awesome! Can’t wait to read it!
It sounds amazing, I hate that we have to wait until September though! Going to be a long summer.
At first I was like..Vampires? What?? Then you think, wow, only Stephen King could pull that off and make it incredible. I had no idea this was even in the works! Just shared your post with a couple other horror lovers! Nice post.
Yea for sure! It’s definitely a surprising angle to a story that had absolutely nothing to do with vampires (or so we thought).Thank you thank you. Much appreciated!
Man I cant wait for this. 🙂
Same! It’s killing me.
Very, very exciting stuff. Look forward to this.
For sure man!
Oooooooh I cannot wait! It is going to be something that is typically King… phenomenal!
Really can’t make my mind up about this. Granted i’ve not read The Shining, but to take such a well known and loved story and throw in vampires seems odd. Still, if anyone can make it work, Mr King can!
You’re right, it’s an odd choice but one that I’m excited about. I like that he didn’t just go with a typical story (Danny revisits the Hotel 40 years later) and is giving us something totally unexpected.
I like the first one but not a huge fan of the second two. But damn that would make a nice coffee table conversation piece lol.
Same here, the first one is by far the best!
