The Conjuring and its True Story

James Wan’s latest foray into the haunted house genre leads him straight into The Conjuring, a film “based on a true story” about a family that was terrorized by demonic entities in which ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to investigate. Many movies are based on some truth, and when it comes to something as terrifying as The Conjuring, then naturally we want to dig deeper into the events that inspired them.

I just recently wrote about the true story behind The Possession, which was produced by Sam Raimi about the famous dibbuk box that held a malicious ancient spirit inside. While that story was much easier to track down, the Harrisville haunting—the inspiration behind The Conjuring—took a little more work because it was a largely unknown case from the Warrens.

What you’re about to read is entirely from the accounts of Andrea Perron, so keep that in mind. Read on and take from it what you will; whether you believe in these things or not, it’s a fascinating story that I hope you guys enjoy.

It had been a very long time before Andrea Perron told her account of what happened to her and the rest of the family in the quiet town of Harrisville, Rhode Island. She kept it all bottled up for three decades until finally releasing her first published work, marking the first book in a three-part series which tells the story of her family’s true experiences while living in a farmhouse riddled with spirits in the lonely Rhode Island countryside.

Although this particular haunting is very well-documented and considered to be one of the most significant hauntings in history, it is still very foreign to many people. The Warrens considered it their “most intense, compelling, disturbing and significant investigation”.

Roger and Carolyn Perron finally purchased their dream home in the winter months of 1970. Little did they know that this house was going to be full of nightmares. As many people would, they were excited to be living in a home full of history and were looking forward to raising their five daughters there. What they didn’t know was that this house was full of agony and death. Two former residents hung themselves — one from the rafters of the barn.

The home was built on beautiful land with plenty of room for five growing children to play. However, once they moved in the spirits began to make their presence known.

Perron says, “My mom just wanted a place in the country to raise her kids”.

“It is an extraordinary place. We started seeing spirits as soon as we moved into the house. Most of them were completely benign and some of them didn’t even seem to notice we were there, but eight generations lived and died in that house prior to our arrival and some of them never left.”

At first many of them appeared to be harmless, like the ghost that smelled of flowers and fruit, the one who would kiss the children goodnight in their beds every night, or the spirit that constantly picked up a broom to sweep the kitchen floor. Everything you would expect from a haunted house seemed to have been happening to the family as well, like things moving on their own and doors slamming shut, or quiet whispers heard throughout the night. Probably the most frightening thing was the sound of something that had the habit of slamming itself into the front door of the house in the middle of the night, waking everyone up. There were obviously some very disturbed spirits among the family.

“We had one my sister called ‘Manny’. He was a sympathetic soul. We think he was actually Johnny Arnold, who committed suicide in the eaves of the house in the 1800s,” Perron said. “He would appear in the house and watch over us. He always appeared in the same place, in the front hallway between the dining room and the kitchen. The apparition would always lean up against the door and would wear a crooked smile like he was amused by the children. As soon as we saw him and made eye contact he was gone.”

What is very interesting is that each member of the family actually saw these spirits wandering throughout the home. They weren’t the only ones though, because those who’ve lived in the house prior to and since the Perron family saw them as well. “Everyone who has lived in the house that we know of has experienced some type of supernatural phenomena,” Perron said. “Some have left screaming and running for their lives. The man who moved in to begin restoration on the house when we sold it left screaming, without his car, without his tools, without his clothing. He never went back to the house and consequently the people who owned it, the adjacent landowners, moved in only briefly and it sat vacant for years.”

Her descriptions of the numerous entities are vivid. Perron recalls their features (or lack thereof) as especially haunting. At times, the spirits would appear opaque, seemingly solid, and other times they were translucent or in the form of mist and fog-like haze. She also claims the spirits actually communicated with the members of the family but it wasn’t through speaking out loud. She describes their discourse as being “telepathic in nature”.

Perron said. “When they would appear it was as if all time stopped. My sister Cindy described it like being “in the bubble”. The air is suddenly compressed and we were unable to move or speak, prohibited from doing anything except listening to what the spirit was trying to tell us.”

James Wan’s The Conjuring is a motion picture based on the haunting which occurred in the Perron home and persists to this day. It is a story told from the perspective of Ed & Lorraine Warren, the paranormal researchers who conducted an investigation of their farmhouse in the early 1970′s. The screenplay is based on their case files as well as information that Ms. Perron provided to the producers. The Warrens did an investigation of the supernatural activity at the house while the family lived there in an attempt to intervene on their behalf. During a séance that goes terribly wrong, they awaken and call forth a horrendous presence, one that Mrs. Warren believed to be Bathsheba, described as a “God-forsaken soul”.

Bathsheba wanted control over Perron’s mother, Carolyn, and was hell-bent and determined to drive her from the house, terrorizing her because the spirit apparently perceived herself as the rightful mistress of the house. She saw Carolyn as competition. She lusted after Roger and coveted the five children, routinely acting out and making her intentions obvious to all of the mortals in the house.Bathsheba frightened Carolyn straight to her bones, tormenting her with fire, a mother’s greatest fear. The spirit would approach her in the night and is described as having a gruesome, misshapen face and a broken neck. This thing was like looking at something straight out of your worst nightmare.

According to legend and local folklore, Bathsheba was suspected of being a practicing witch and was accused of sacrificing an infant child as an offering to the devil. More than two dozen mysterious and tragic deaths occurred on the property. Although she was absolved of any wrongdoing in a courtroom, the court of public opinion was not so kind. Bathsheba lived a miserable life and died an old woman in 1885 from a bizarre form of paralysis which the physician who examined the corpse found stunning and utterly inexplicable.

Early accounts of Bathsheba’s life before becoming this tortured soul are said that she was a young and beautiful woman when an infant mysteriously died in her care. When the baby was discovered, the mortal wound was presumably caused by a needle which was impaled at the base of its skull, which caused it to have convulsions and die. Bathsheba denied these charges and ultimately walked free due to insufficient evidence. Although Bathsheba may have walked free, these accusations never left her as they haunted her for life. Perhaps this is why Bathsheba wanted Perron’s mother out of the home and away from the children so badly.

“What she put my mother through, no human being should ever have to endure,” Perron claims. “She appeared to several of us, but I never saw her. I saw many of the spirits, but I never saw her except in a telepathic dream state. When she would appear to my mother, I would see the encounter in a dream state at the same time it was occurring, though I was rendered immobile and helpless to offer any assistance while she was appearing to torment my mother.”

Perron’s description of Bathsheba is where things really start getting creepy because she describes the sprit’s face as having almost no real features. Instead, it looked like a lifeless beehive with vermin crawling all over it. “Its head was leaning off to one side. It was round and gray, resembling a desiccated hornet’s nest. I couldn’t see anything underneath it… no eyes or mouth…it looked like the cobwebs hanging in the corners of the cellar.” This, as described by her mother.

Despite having Ed and Lorraine Warren attempt to dispel the evil spirits they ended up doing more harm then good and were never successful in ridding the house of its horror. The family stayed in the home for ten years before finally leaving — but the horrible things that happened within those walls stayed with them forever.

Perron always knew there would be skeptics and I don’t blame her. Her story isn’t the only one that has been subject to criticism over whether it is true or not, which explains why she waited 30 years to tell the world what really happened in that farmhouse. Obviously there is so much more to this story than what I’ve covered here and quite honestly, I have only scratched the surface. This article is only meant to give you an idea as to where the story for James Wan’s The Conjuring came from and to hopefully give you some insight as to what really happened. What I’ve written here is really all I know on the events so if you want to learn more I strongly urge you to read Perron’s book, House of Darkness House of Light: The True Story, because it gives a very in-depth and detailed look into this story.

So what do you guys think? Do you believe her story and that evil spirits really do exist? Have you ever had an experience like this yourself? Personally, I’ve never experienced any sort of paranormal happenings but that doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t believe in ghosts or tortured spirits. It’s one of those things that’s truly hard to believe until you’ve experienced it yourself. I’d love to hear your stories and thoughts on this so please leave them below.  Also, I thought you guys would dig this — it’s a photo of Lorraine Warren, one of the major inspirations behind the film.

  1. Good Day;
I have just come across this sight and have been sitting reading for a while- very interesting indeed. I am living in South Africa and my family and I have had experiences that you could write a novel or two about. Good and Bad…. But recently I have come across a new problem entirely. About 4 years ago I moved in with my Fiance, at the time he was sharing a household with some friends( commune style) the house itself has a dark history with the owner’s father beating his mother to death in the kitchen and he himself being killed when he tripped and hit his head on the kitchen counter and they only found him a few days later… Any way as this is a communal house there is a man living in the lounge ( converted to a room) We will call him W. The owner and his girlfriend in their own room; we in ours and my 9 year old son in his. Before W moved in , we have always known and heard our “friend’ as we have learned to call him. Move around the passage(wooden floors throughout
)- walking up and down and coming into our room – not malevolent at all . About two years ago we went to Europe for 4 months, but before we left we could hear our ‘friend’ becoming agitated. stomping at night , slamming doors etc, but not harmful at all.

When we returned to South Africa Dec 2010 all was back to normal, until the 2nd Jan 2011, when W moved in. Now W is a habitual nuisance we all have had to lock our fridges, doors etc, you cant even leave food out or it will be eaten. I had a huge fall out because of reasons such as this with W. Now just to add a notation in- Males in this household have always had a violent tendency, My fiance knows where he stands with me regarding things like that, but it seems that all the males get possessed and violent, even the landlord who frequently beats his girlfriend up cannot remember it in the morning. – Any way back to W – since his arrival we have had impossible bad luck , things that possibly cant go wrong will. when W’s girlfriend comes and visits him its usually chaos usually ending with a big fight and her trying to drive the gate down as he has a tendency to lose his keys. Besides the ongoing bad luck , my fiance and him had a huge fall out and I recorded the fight on my Cell to keep as evidence for the police as we wanted to have him arrested by now, when I watched the footage – as the argument was getting more and more heated a white smokey cloud was emitting from W , my fiance was sitting in the chair – not antagonizing him or nothing and at one stage the cloud took the shape of him- but at the same time being part of him…. I showed the footage to many people who agree that it was definitely paranormal in nature. I tried downloading to my CPU , but for some or other reason it just ‘vanished’. My phone never leaves my side as I work off it. Many instances have occurred where things vanish and then reappear in the same place later, stove gets switched off when you turn around , water appearing in tubs when no one is around, loud bangs, foot steps, thumping, shadows, and so much more. Recently I was in bed one afternoon, its winter here now and was my day off and decided I wanted to watch movies- the boys were away for the weekend and I was watching a movie ‘2012’( just in case someone says that it was a horror) and I was in about 15 min, when I heard a loud bang when an ornament from the top of my wardrobe flew across the room and hit my door, it was a little hanging bottle of whiskey on a stand, surprisingly the stand was still standing on my wardrobe but the hanging parts were swinging violently.

In more recent activities- about 3/4 nights ago my son came in to our bed as he had a nightmare( which happens often these days) as I was dozing off I looked at our door ( which was closed) and a dark figure was peering out behind it which was now slightly ajar) I tried to wake my fiance up and he would not budge which is unlike him as he is a VERY light sleeper.
I closed my eyes and this ark presence was in the room VERY DARK the air felt thick with blackness- I opened my eyes and the door was closed again but I could see it coming towards me as it was blacker than night, I panicked and started shaking my fiance who was still in this daze , I jumped up and ran for the light so fast I did not know how I managed to do that( I am not a small chick either LOL) Any way it was gone he was awake and looking at me like I am nuts , I told him and he said I had a bad dream????

Back to W , whenever He is angry, you can hear him hissing like a snake and cursing in another language- like Yiddish or something .

I know people are going to ask why don’t we move???? 1stly, this is all we can afford at the moment( as mentioned – very bad luck for a while) 2ndly its close to my work and my sons school and under the circumstances If I could move I would have done it a while ago.

I have tried the priest route , the open bible , even my landlords girlfriend has tried but she will open it to a psalm and it will flip pages and fly off the table, the reason why I am putting this up here is maybe somebody will be able to help and give advice, I have been thinking of trying to record an EVP but scared of what I will hear.

Thanks for listening and hopefully somebody out there may have advice, we have also tried cleansing ceremonies with Sage and prayers.

  2. I’ve had a lot of experience with good and bad energies. One I was even forced inside the body of another. I was so excited I was not focusing on what it wanted me to see. What I was excited about and played “inside” was the eye sockets. I found it to be so awesome I kept checking out the white boney area. However, it was showing me that up the road was my son walking with blood all over him. This turned out to have happened the same time I was forced into my dead fathers body and to see out of his eyes. He was parked outside my living room in the direction my son would be walking. When I was forced out of his body I went running outside in a panic and sure enough my son was being helped by my niece and he was filled with blood. He was ok, he had taken a fall on his bike over a gravel pit. Another time was I saw on a TV that was “off” a telegraph man coming to our door and giving my husband a message. So I don’t sound too crazy, I just said to my husband, “hon we are going to get a telegraph and if not the upstairs people will”. I made up that lie about the upstairs in case. However, the telegram came 10 minutes later for my husband but they rang the upstairs bell. All this is so very true. One bad one was I was being pulled into a dream so hard that I had so much pain in my stomach. I had the hardest time getting off the sofa and could even see the imprint of my body once I was able to throw my body off the side of it. I’ve recently had one spirit hold my hands down while lying in bed at night. Another was tugging at my foot. When I scold them and tell them to back off cause I’m tired and am getting pissy they stop. The one that held my chest now years ago was different. Child like but one hand on my chest kept my whole body from being moved. Seemed something was going on and I was not to wake yet but did. She held me down until I was suppose to wake. strange but true. I do believe in spirits but I think it is how you react and what you do about it that is most important. I don’t challenge myself because I am not educated in that world. I take what comes and push away what I can.

  3. I just want to say thank you to all the ppl everyone has there own story so if you do have one come out and say it thank you everyone

  4. I have all way believe in this kind of stuff people always tell me that is not real but I think it is I have seen the TV show but I don’t think them are real but when someone tells me a story I feel deep down it is real I really like this kind of stuff and I can not wait to go see this movie and I want to know if they have a book and where to find it at because I want to keep reading about it more and more will thank you everyone.

    1. You can purchase Andrea Perron’s book from Amazon.com. It is called House of Darkness, House of Light. They have other true haunting books as well that you might also enjoy.

  5. Was wondering if anyone here can explain this. When I was, I guess 18, I was sleeping on my back in my bed close to 6am. For some reason I woke and found what I will describe that looked like a green leprechaunish figure standing over me, looking down and laughing at me. For some reason instead of being scared, I was mad at it and took a swing at it. Well it then stopped laughing, got mad and then tried to jump inside me. I guess the lord was protecting me as it was not able to get in me (I think) so instead it bit me on my back under my shoulder blade. I then ran across the room and turned on the light. There was nothing there. As I tried to rationalize I figured it was a cat or rat?? that bit me. However my door was shut and there was nothing in the room. I figured I had a bad dream, even though my back was burning in pain. So I got up and went downstairs since I was scared. My mother was cooking breakfast. At first I did not tell her anything. A little later my back was still hurting so I told her about my crazy dream and that for some reason my back was hurting for no reason. I pulled up my shirt to show her where it was hurting when I heard her gasp and drop the spatula. She told me I had human teeth marks in my skin. She got a mirror and showed me. It looked like a person had pinched my skin while biting me. There was perfect teeth indentions in my back. Thankfully I have never seen it before or since then. It scarred the heck out of me obviously. So here is the weirdest part, I have hair on my back but for some reason, on the area where I was bit, there is a nice circle where no hair grows. I know this sounds laughable but this event has bother me for years. I did ask a guy in college who was into dark stuff and he told me it was a traveling banshee. I don’t know. Any of the experts know?

    1. don’t get paranormal advice from mediums/clairvoyants/people who communicate with the dead, or anybody involved in the occult…. they are themselves deceived and are in spiritual bondage, unable to come to the truth. Jesus is the only one with authority, the Son of the Most High God. It was no ‘travelling banshee’, but a demon. The very same demons who can scare us half to death, are EXPONENTIALLY more terrified of Jesus of Nazareth! They tremble and shake and cannot approach His light and truth! Repent of your sins and ask your Father in heaven for forgiveness and protection. Only His power and authority has dominion over these fallen spirits. There is no such thing as good/bad spirits… they are all deceivers, they’re purpose is to drag as many as they can to hell with them. They know their destination is hell, and they hate humanity because we can accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Heaven was their estate, but they rejected the ordinances and authority of God and fell from grace. They hate mankind and wish nothing more that we share in their same fate, eternal damnation. Pray for Jesus Christ to come into your heart, into your home and to protect you and your family. It truly is your only way to have authority over them, not of our own power, but by the authority given to us through belief in the power and VICTORY of Jesus of Nazareth. God bless

  6. I believe in the super natural. I remeber being a young girl and a ghost of a young boy was in my room and you get that feeling of being unable to move. I also know that in another apartment we lived in my mom said near her closet she would see a ghost. I was a snoopy little girl and was in my moms closet looking at pictures when I felt like someone or something was behind me and I ran out of the closet so fast from fear. I believe that ghost or spirts are all around and that some people aremore aware of them.

  7. Good Gravy! This movie has sparked an incredible interest. I personally have been attracted (or terrified) by the movies that claim they are based on a true story, after I watched MothMan Prophisies and read all the documentation.

  8. My aunt said when I was really little, I saw a demon. I just didn’t know what it was, so that’s why wasn’t scared. Some members in my family can see supernatural stuff. Especially my aunt (the same one). She said when she was little, she kept seeing the devil play the piano at her house. And she would be crying of course! Because it was scary! But yeah, I believe and ghosts in stuff.

  9. I do believe because i have lived in my home for going on ten years and i keep a journal of exsperiences. i have people who will not stay long or come on my property because they are to scared. i believe it may be me drawing them to my home.

  10. Those things people point out in this film are put in there on purpose by the producers to make you think they are real. Of course, they’re going to do that. They have a movie to make money off of! I don’t believe most of this story. I think that there may have been activity there but if so, it was demonic. There is no such thing as dead people hanging around. So-called ghosts are actually demons (fallen angels) in disguise. But this is too over the top to believe all of it. Doesn’t anyone remember how after “The Amytiville Horror” it was found to be a hoax? And guess what? The Warrens were involved in that case, too. Check it out on Snopes.

  11. When I was toddler back in the mid 70s we lived in an apartment off of Chef Menteur Hwy in New Orleans. My bedroom was located in the very back of the apartment and I could see all the way down the hallway into the living room from my bed. To the left of my bedroom door was a long dresser that my mom would sometimes put my folded laundry on top of and I would wake in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder because the clothes would look like living, slithering snakes. About 10 years ago, as a 30 year old adult, I was talking to my mom about that apartment and about the “snakes” on my dresser and she said that she couldnt believe that I remembered all of that because I was so young then. She then asked me if I remembered the man in the black dress. I told her no. She told me that I used to talk to someone in my room all the time and when she would ask me who I was talking to, Id reply that it was the man in the black dress. Even now every time something bad happens to me, I wonder if he may be following me through life like some people have mentioned in the stories above.

  12. I just want to share a possible paranormal event that happened maybe 20 years ago in my family. I mostly want to share as a warning for people to realize there are things you may be doing (not purposefully of course) that can open doors to evil spirits attacking you either literally or spiritually (depression, sadness, strife, etc) My brother at the time was probably about 18 and loved heavy metal music. So eventually he started listening to some dark stuff and mentioned to me the names of the bands he liked. He said yeah they were sort of “satanic” but he didn’t pay attention to the lyrics. I asked a guy I sat by at work who was into darker things about the bands and he knew all about them and brought me their lyrics. It was some BAD stuff, making fun of Christ on the cross, praising the devil, not just your typical rebelious metal but pure evil. I was shocked and told my brother God was not going to like him listening to that garbage. He defended it once again as he just likes the guitars, doesn’t care about the lyrics and its no big deal. Well a couple weeks later he showed up and was in a serious mood, he said he had destroyed the albums and threw it all away. He said he started hearing the chairs in the kitchen move on their own was no one was home and his bedroom window would open and close on its own. (window was old and hard to open) All this scared him really bad and he knew instinctively that some how the music was causing it, hence the reason he destroyed it. Nothing else happened in my parent’s house after that but my brother has struggled ever since with crippling depression, anxiety, alcohol and just problem after problem. When I say crippling I mean, he has lost jobs, been homeless twice, has no friends, just alot of big problems. Now, all these years later he says he feels like demons are oppressing him BUT the weird part is I mentioned the “evil music” from the past and he had no idea what I was talking about! He cannot remember that whole event! My point is, be careful what you delve into. There are many things that attract evil spirits that seem harmless. Pornography, rage, fighting with your family, music, TV shows with alot of sex, murder, adultery made to look glamorous. Not saying you will have supernatural attacks if you get into these things, just saying it is POSSIBLE. Jesus tells us to stay in the light, because you never know what is in the darkness waiting to ruin your life. I pray all the time for you out there who have problems with bad spirits, I pray that God will get them away from you because eventually they may drain away everything that’s good in your life.

  13. I’ve experienced things, along with my daughter, over the years I can’t explain. From seeing an orb (way before I’d ever heard of one and didn’t know what I was looking at when it happened) to having a picture fly off the wall, to my dog growling and crouching as she paced obviously seeing something we couldn’t. Trying to turn a doorknob while something was turning it in the opposite direction. My daughter has seen a ‘shadowy figure’ pass by her. Lamps shaking while nothing else in the room moves, not even a ripple in the glass of iced tea sitting on my coffee table a few feet away, and always within the same time frame (around 1am). This was witnessed by my daughter thankfully, because my husband doesn’t really believe in the paranormal and gives me that puzzled look when I tell him about things that have happened. And I have had the sensation of someone’s fingers lightly tracing up and down my arm, it happened again yesterday and happens quite often. It’s always my right arm, and it happens in different rooms in the home we are in now. These experiences have happened over years and in different locations. I can’t explain them and there are more than these. For those who debunk paranormal experiences I say wait until it happens to you. You will go over and over it in your mind, trying to rationalize it until you realize that you can’t.

  14. hi eveyone i really need help ive just moved in to new house with my family, mum dad my sister, and older brother. and apparntly every night since we moved in. at least one of the has been disturbed in 1 way or another. and just recently. (these last few nights) ive started hearing whispers litiraly rite next to me just before i fall asleep. saying dont worrie you will be ok you are one of us. i am now really considering moving out. to my own place. some with experience in this sort of thing plz help. could it be a demon?

    1. Tom, if you’re worried, to get rid of evil spirits, I played the bible on tape. 2 weeks later, it was gone. Please let me know if this helps.

  15. Tom, when feeling uneasy try saying aloud ” I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to leave”. Depending what it is it may not leave for good but it should get it away from you for a time. Or try reading a Psalm that praises God.

  16. i just want to know what it means when its saying its ok you are one of us. thats the most frightining thing ever and i just carnt get over it . none of my familiy have herd voices but, unexplaind shadows, doors closing on there own and even foot steps. but iam the only one that seems to be getting these whispers. just before i got to sleep. and yes i ve tried what you have said. but nothing yet. could i be doing it wrong by any chance.

  17. Tom, I am sorry to hear that, I am sure that is very disturbing to you, would be to me! It sounds like the voice is trying to scare or dishearten you. Whatever they mean by saying that it is not true. You are certainly not “one of them” you are a living breathing human who is greatly loved by God, not a demon or lost soul or whatever the heck they are creeping around a house scaring people. I can only say if it were me I would be sprinkling holy water all over my room before going to bed while saying prayers, proclaiming my position as a child of God and forbidding anyone from entering the room. Ask your friends/family to pray for you. If however you start not feeling like yourself like getting overwhelmed with negative emotions like depression or anger you may consider getting the heck out of there. You don’t need your life in a mess over some creep hanging around in that house.

  18. The Sains House in Melrose, New Mexico even had the cops scared. If anyone checks it out make sure the devil don’t follow you home.

  19. When I was 12 or 13 I kept seeing a little boy he would be dripping wet and waving at Me. first time I saw this was top off my street I saw him he waved a car went pass n he vanished I was with my mum I. asked if she saw she said no and also my friend had inconters wen she was younger she woke up and a boy and a girl was sat in corner she ran at wall and vanished we done a sayunce in her room and matt was trying to film it started to film at the end it had stopped filming and the tape was deleted also we voice recorded it and all you could her was I’m behind u on the tape and me and matt was holding hands also with 2 other people in our group at thar moment on the tape I got chills and could feel coldair going across our hands and i just got the terrorfing feeling. To look behind me also in here house u can here people running up and down he stairs when we r only there in her room I have also have another inconter with a boyfriends dead brother who Hung himselfin his flat. we was looking under under the fire place and he put the Nife down (didn’t have screwdriver) infront off him I asked. “pass me that nife please” he had a confused look and I repeated he said “it was right infront off my I turned round and it was point down behind my head on the sofa like it had been thrown

  20. I have had several experiences throughout my life, starting from the age of 6. When I was 6, I saw a man walk past my window. I remember clearly. I was in the TV room by myself, watching anime and coloring. Anyway, when I saw him, he appeared alive at first. Except for the fact that his skin was a green

  21. I have had many weird happenings of supernatural nature in my life so far. The craziest being attacked by what many call shadow people.I’ve heard it called the tall thin man or the old hag as well.I awoke one night to use the bathroom.I went to get up but could not move.head to toe paralized.couldnt even speak.the only thing I could do was breathe and move my eyes.I then noticed a shadow moving in the corner of the room above the window.I closed my eyes and then opened them .At that moment the shadow jumped to the foot of my bed .off the wall into a three dimensional shadowy form.solid black shadow figure my room. I could see right through it but it had form. I could tell it had a wide brimmed hat and was wearing a cloak, but it was all made up of like a black fog and dark matter.I literally pissed myself Iwas so scared. it slowly go closer and closer but its movements were not fluid, more choppy. Next thing I knew it was on top of me pushing on my chest.it had no facial features just black.but it was face to face so close I could feel its breath in my face. I felt this weird buzzing energy emitting from it.do not know what it wanted from me, but as it was on me I prayed to christ in my mind with eyes shut.then when I opened them it was gone.

  22. My friends who’s family is all shamans tell us so much story’s of ghosts and what they see… You guys need to talk to some Hmong shamans 🙂

  23. I have had a lot of experiences since I was young. Multiple homes In different locations. One thing I would like to know is why these things seem to happen to just a few of us? My boyfriend wants to experience what I do but never does. He says he believes me and I think he does but at the same time I feel a bit crazy when I talk about this with him. Mostly because I know he doesn’t know what it’s like. I am kept up for days at a time. Im not afraid but it does affect me. My sister has experienced things and my mother has noticed ” odd ” things. Why does it seem to affect the women in my home and not my Boyfriend? Any Ideas???

  24. I grew up in Baltimore Maryland in the city and grew up in a haunted house. There was a very evil spirit a big black thing that would stand at the bottom of my bed, then Ollie the closet ghost would make and appearance and the black thing would go away. Ollie I believe was my protector. You could here your name being whispered and things would just disappear and then come back later to the same spot. All my life everybody said it was because of the epileptic seizures I was having, but finally one day my Mother and my Husband bot saw that black thing come up the steps and go right through the wall to my best friends house. Other things were crazy too, but I would be here all day if I told you.

  25. Loved the article. Thanks for sharing your research. I always go see these “based on true story” movies but wonder just how much is truth. This sheds some light on it for me-thanks. I’m seeing it tomorrow. I had a few strange encounters before. A few years back I had purchased a small Victorian cottage as an estate sale. The lil old lady that had lived there for years had been placed in assisted care so I got a good deal from the family. Needed so much work so dug right in. I had just finished my 3 month renno and had begun to settle in one night around 11 or so n my very docile cat raced from the kitchen into the dining room hissing and bucking in the air, I was walking thru about the center of the dining room, turned around to see what was going on with the cat and there stood before me a lil old lady. At first I assumed must be a neighbor so as I started to ask her what she wanted she just disappeared. I can’t explain it but it freaks me out to think about it. She was there, I saw her and then like someone flipped a switch she was gone. I had nowhere to go, flat broke from all the work I’d done so I had no choice but to stay there, so I slept on the sofa practically strangling my cat, lights on all night. The next day I opened all the blinds to let the sun n and started my day when I got a phone call from the lady the daughter of the lady whose house I had bought. She had died that previous evening about 11. I assume what I saw was the lady leaving her body passing thru a familiar place. I never saw her again although from time to time I’d get a creepy feeling or hear a strange noise. Makes me shudder to think about still. I’m intrigued to see the movie. I think there are some things we just can’t see or explain that do exist. I’m skeptical that these entities would be so exhibiting as it appears the movie portrays but Ill have to go get the book now of the actual account and weigh that. Thanks again for the opportunity to post!

  26. What is with all the Jesus and God and bible references?! If a person believes in “god” how can you not also believe in ghosts or spirits? There is more scientific reasoning to support paranormal activity than there is god. Just because a book talks about god doesn’t make it true. I have books about Spider-Man, is he real? I don’t believe in god and I’ve experienced paranormal activity my entire life (43years). It’s never demonic – that is the mind’s construct.

    1. For the Anon who posted ‘Justy, that is a lit straight from Hell…’

Every word I say I have experienced I HAVE. I know there are Evil spirits, I have faced Demon’s and I’ve heard the screams of Hell and trust me, it’s NOT something you go ‘lying’ about. You’re obviously a man of God, so you’re telling me you don’t believe in Angel’s? Because surely an Angel is a spirit. A good spirit. Therefore, a Demon is a fallen Angel – a bad spirit. I have fully accepted God into my life and my ‘goings on’ stopped. But the Devil will always put up a fight. And it did. In turn, we had a backlash and it didn’t leave straight away. But it eventually did. And all the evil stopped. I’m here to share my story (as the film did) and try to help other’s still experiencing such horror’s. You have no right to call me a liar or to dismiss my opinions and experiences.

With that I would like to remind you of Matt 7:2-5:

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged [if we judge with an evil heart or dark intent, His judgment of us will reflect it; if we judge nobly with honesty and justice, His judgment of us will reflect that, too], and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you [if we use extremes or exaggerations or other ignoble means, His judgment of us will reflect it and judging with fairness and compassion will garner likewise in His judgment of us]. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye [point out his sins, “minor” in Jesus’ example here] and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye [our own sins, even and especially those we will not admit, magnified by our selective blindness]? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ [tell him of his “minor” sins] when all the time there is a plank in your own eye [that there are greater or the same sins in our own lives which we do nothing about or think we are above]? You hypocrite* [pointing out the sins of others while by pretense thinking of ourselves as above sin], first take the plank out of your own eye [sincerely ask the Lord for forgiveness and learn and live the Truth and Light by His Word], and then you will see clearly [be in a righteous position] to remove the speck from your brother’s eye [to judge and to help him out of his bondage to sin].” At Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan, Jesus was talking to the multitudes gathered there after hearing of His message and of His healings to beseech them to not become like the pharisees and hypocrites who think they are above sin.

  27. Great. So now that in these recent horror movies its the popular thing to have the “spirit” or “demon” follow people from house to house, now everyone’s ghost story has it following them from house to house. Or, it isn’t the house, you’re the one that’s haunted! Oh my!

You have to experience it first hand to believe in it? Does this exist with anything in our world? I don’t have to experience Asia to know its there. I don’t have to smoke pot to know it makes people high. I don’t have to break a bone to know it hurts.

    1. Yes – Christianity invented the devil and they are the ones who seem to experience the demonic possession stuff…like I said, it’s the mind’s construct from brainwashing.

      1. That’s sort of a blanket statement. I have talked to people who have never had an interest in God/Christianity that have experienced paranormal events, some felt it was evil even though they don’t believe in a devil or hell.

      2. If Christians, Jews and Muslims all have satan and hell in their scriptures, how is devil a Christian invention? Re-invention is more like it. Goes back to ancient Egypt and perhaps further than that.

      3. I can understand others (non-Christians) saying it feels evil, but they don’t whip out the bible and start throwing satan around. I still believe the evil part comes from the mind, though. Spirits may feel different to different people. If someone is scared and convincing themselves it’s bad and evil, it will be.

  28. Thank you for this. I have been searching hard for a simply put account of the true story behind it. I have always loved horror movies myself since I was 3 years old (my older cousin would watch them and she let me join in), but to me they were always just movies until I found myself in one. I have spoken to ghosts and seen them and heard them many times before. The first time, I was at a friend’s house, mocking her for believing her house was haunted, pretending to talk to the ghost when he talked to me in much the same way described by Perron. Thank you again for posting this. Blessed be.

  29. About 13 years ago, I was very into the supernatural. I felt that with the “evidence” that was presented (crop circles, ufo photos and accounts, tough to explain ghost phenomenons), there had to be more to this world. I started visiting local haunted areas in and around Chicago. I had visited graveyards, houses, properties, streets, that were hosts to all kinds of ghostly activities, according to the local lore. I would go there at very specific times in which these entities were to appear. I did believe that plenty of ghost phenom were results of people’s imaginations and what not, but absolutely believed in ghosts.

There was this building, still am not sure exactly what it was, but at this time, it was abandoned and was being prepared to be torn down. A few years prior, my brothers and a friend were driving home from a movie and took this short cut, which this particular road cuts 10-15 minutes of driving time. They came across this place, which isn’t hidden from view, but is deeper within the property. What they described always reminded me of the beginning of Halloween, when Loomis is picking up Myers for transport, and there’s a bunch of patients just walking around the grounds. The place did look like a sanitarium of some kind. It was old, and the only information I ever really found what actually the place was used for, was a grocery store or grocery warehouse. I was fascinated by this place. I had parked elsewhere and walked onto the grounds, but in that town, if you’re caught trespassing, you’re in trouble, so I didn’t want to linger. One basically had to just drive past the place slowly, and see if they could spot anything.

One afternoon, I did a couple slow drive bys. I had headed south down the road, and before that property, I drove past a group of people walking. Maybe 20 total, all dressed pretty nice. It only struck me as odd because it was hot out and they were dressed in sport coats and ties. I drove past the property, turned around, and head back north. I did not see any of those people, and that I found odd. I stopped and looked around to see where they could possibly had gone, didn’t see any businesses right there that looked open.

I went home, and wrote those disappearing people off, as my focus was finding information on that property. As I was doing internet research, I came across a story about that particular road and how if you drive by at a certain time of day, you’ll see a group of people walking, but they disappear once you turn around. There was a backstory about how a group of people were caught in a fire and died right there some years before, and they’re just trying to find their way.

This was very eerie, and although I still looked for an explanation, I was unable to find one and had to say that maybe it was ghosts. Unfortunately, I moved out of state not too long after that, so I wasn’t able to investigate the area more. So, I saw a group of ghosts, right?

Later, I find out that there was a business right there, in plain view, and those people do group building exercises and one of them, is taking group walks at mid-day. The business doesn’t have a sign on it and isn’t retail or anything, so its not “open” and the parking was across the street, thus, why I didn’t see a group of cars next to any building that could look like an office or business. It was no ghost, there wasn’t even a real backstory anywhere near there. It wasn’t exactly a hoax, it was someone perceiving something because they couldn’t explain it at that time, therefore, instead of looking for the simplest explanation, they went with the outlandish.

So why when I saw them, did I fall into this category? Because I wanted to. My mind was already set on finding something extraordinary, so I didn’t really look for any real explanations, and I allowed my brain to invite those outlandish explanations.

This is just one of several stories I have that all were easily debunked once I decided that not everything was a ghost.

    1. Seeing as how they’re always found in the woods or way the heck in “forbidden land”, I’d say Jeep.

  30. Funny how all of these people saying they experienced these thing are strongly religious, coincidence? I think not!

    1. But you have to understand that almost everyone has a religious affiliation to some degree. These things happen and so it’s very common to simply make a religious connection to it. Meaning if you see the devil you relate it to Beliefs about God and what happens after you die, it’s just the natural connection

  31. I have never really had a “scary” ghost situation, however aftermoving into my house in AZ, one night 18 months ago, I woke up to go to the kitchen and found an old man whose back was to me sitting on my sofa and an old lady watching me beside him. They never really scared me. I was more curious. Night after night, I saw them. I woke my wife up one night to see to prove to her I was not dreaming. She couldn’t see them, but was freaked out that I could describe them in such detail. This went on for three months. There were some nights where I saw other people with them. The whole time, I was surprised I was not afraid of them. I would get up and talk to them. They would acknowledge me talking and come closer but never to close? The last night I saw them was a Friday night. The following night, for the first time in 3 months, they were not there? Sunday morning, my uncle called me from Canada to tell me that my aunt had passed Saturday morning. It makes me wonder if they were family on “the other side” getting ready for my aunt. I am a physician and have seen many patients in their terminal stage and they all talk about dead family visiting them in the few days before they die. Google “sun downing” or “sun downers syndrome”. Just thought I would share.

  32. So I got from this film that when experiencing paranormal, or haunting, that it is not attached to places but rather the person? We grew up moving around a lot- we were poor and evicted frequently- but in each home my family experienced many phenomena. My sister and I have been trying to research the homes we lived in as kids to try to find out why some of these things have happened, been seen, or heard. These kinds of things have continued into my adulthood and sometimes in places I don’t live in. Because these things have happened since I was very young, I am not as fearful now when it happens, just always wanting to find answers behind why they occur. I am a Christian so I know I am not “possessed” but wondering now if I should consult someone to “fix” my haunting? Nothing ever malevolent, scary sometimes, nothing harmful. Suggestions?

    1. Check out my full post below that’s also under the name Michael. I’ve had tons and tons of extremely intense run-ins with demons. The truth is that it is never something that you can truly fix, but you can control them

  33. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS, MOST OF YOU DON’T KNOW AND TRY TO BE OPEN MIND ABOUT THIS THANKS! After doing some research and reading the history about Bathsheba I personally feel she wasn’t a bad woman. I don’t believe she killed an infant child. They don’t go into details about it. Such as who was the infant child? was it her niece or nephew was it her own child? I think that people lied and accused her killing the baby and so called said she was a witch. Back in those times most women were consider witches especially NYC, BOSTON, RHODE ISLAND and basically up north. I think she was sick that was why her face was like that but she lived to be old and in the end was with her son who was a farmer just like her husband who passed away. People just make up stories that isn’t true and it becomes legend just like the old legend story about Bloody Mary. Bathsheba wasn’t a witch! No one should assume, judge and even think because in realty no one don’t know the real truth. In those times investigator wasn’t good they way they are now. Even in 1960’s too. My great aunt Millie died in 1960 cops investigate. In my opinion really didn’t, but they said that she killed herself and threw herself out the window. I laugh about this NOW because it wasn’t true at her. Her husband who had an affair with another woman plan to kill her so he can get rid of my great aunt to make it seem she killed herself. Before that tragic happened to my great aunt Millie she was cooking, her 4 yr old daughter was in the bathroom taking a bath as my aunt went back and forth to make sure her daughter was okay and will go to the kitchen cooking. She knew he was cheating on her and her plans was getting ready to eat, wash her baby girl, pack and then leave but unfortunately Millie’s plan turn out unsuccessful. He took everything from her and gave it to his damn whore and then to top it off at the funeral he had the nerve to be there with his bitch and never shade one tear for my poor aunt. This this day my family and I talk about this sad story, Millie was a hard working, sweet, loyal, humble, young, smart, faithful strong and beautiful woman. Sucks that the good people are the ones who suffer the most and how there lives are taken away so fast and yet so tragically. I always said there is the 3rd side of the story and that’s the TRUTH!. I DON’T believe in ghost that’s little kids crap saying. What the Parron family such as everyone else who experience supernatural is EVIL! 95 percent of it is EVIL. Many people died in that land of where the Parron used to live many of it was suicide. If you believe in GOD and actually read the bible it does mention about evil and how it talks about if you know a place is evil do not enter because all it is, is negative evil soul not only it haunts the place but it can haunts YOU. The devil is everywhere and killing yourself doesn’t make you go to the light you stay in the darkness that’s why they stay in the house because they don’t want to let o and cross over to hell. They want to take US down with them when they see people who live in their territory. Best thing is to GET OUT, do lots of praying for yourself and family and that these negative evil spirits won’t follow you. Just the same way evil exist like bad people do on this earth it the same way good exist like good people are living. We living and battling GOOD VS EVIL. So when it comes to facing an evil spirit we have to fight and not show fear, pray and believe in God and when you leave you put it behind you close that chapter. The key to all this is praying, being strong, fight and not to ever show fear. Remember that you are not alone! I know what it’s like because faced an evil dark spirit. I was a little girl, it said my name and for me to go with him. I froze, prayed to God to help me in my head, closed my eyes and didn’t move. When I felt in my heart it was gone and open my eyes I felt protected by an angel then all of a sudden my room got bright. I knew I was okay. Years after that I did experience only my name being called but I will ignore it. That’s another thing too when you hear your name being called always ignore it because that’s the DEVIL. I’m 26 years old and the last time I heard my name being called was two years ago. I’m more closer to God because I feel safe and protected I feel much happier. I can say that I am living. I rather be on the light side. Advice to all don’t go to a place where you know its evil or if there was a bad event that took place do not enter because all you doing is asking for it and if you don’t know and experience something evil paranormal however you want to call it, still it’s EVIL because when it harms you it is EVIL!!… One you want to do is get the hell out, pray hard and believe in God, ignore them or at least try too and try hard not to be scare but also try to get out of that negative place.

  34. I went and saw it today when it came out and i loved it lorraine warren was one of the reasons i went to see it i heard about a few other cases that she worked on i know shes the real deal.

  35. This is so awesome. It shines great light on the true story. I’m glad it is true cause I love the movie. Just seen it tonight and now i wanna read the book so i will. Thanks so much

  36. if all this stupid shit kept happening why didn’t they just tear that house down bunch of fake bullshit

    1. The demon was not attached to the house, it was attached to the family. So tearing down the house would do no good for them. It would actually make the demon angrier. Tearing down the house is basically like a renovation on the house. Which always makes matters worse if you try to change something about the house in other words, it will just fuel the demon and makes everything worse.

  37. I recently went to watch the Conjuring. Last night actually. And it’s deffinetely hard to believe it’s a true story. I have encountered with the paranormal before and this just seems a bit outrageous. I believe the story that Carolyn has told, but the movie has to stretch the truth a bit. The movie is hardly anything like the article above. So it’s hard to tell what’s true from the movie and what’s fiction. I have nothing negative to say about that movie at all, it was a great movie. I just think they should have stated that not the whole movie is exactly factual. Because people are going to think that this is completely true and nothing other than true, unless you research, as i have. I would also like to put out there that I am only 13 years old and know exactly what I’m talking about. But I do not check my email ever. So if you can, i would deffinetely rather you reply to me via twitter. @hayde_leek
Thank you so much for this article. This is the only one i have found so far that states the truth. And also if you know of anywhere i could buy Perrons book i would really appreciate it. Have a nice day. 🙂

  38. I’m an Army soldier and i use to be stationed at Joint-Base Lewis McChord, washington back in 2012. At one point in time, i lived in base housing which has been a round longer then most people today. Some buildings just harbor spirits and others dont. My luck i found the one that harbored a negative spirit. It wasnt like an everyday thing…..it was just one incedent that makes my skin crawl even to this day: it was late at night and me and my wife had an arguement that night (already bad ju-ju) and she went up stairs and shut the door on me so i was stuck down stairs. Usually im a i dont beleve it till i see it kinda guy, but in this case i would have rather not heard it at all till i moved…..well i had just finished a show so i turn off the tv and im just sitting there thinking about how im going to sneak into bed, when i feel this heaviness on my shoulders. Mind you you the lights are on and no one is awake at 3am. I hear this deep demanding voice from no where telling me “GET OUT!” It felt like i was pushed back in my couch and i couldnt say anything for a while till i booked it upstair and shut the door. It shook me so bad i didnt tell my wife till after we moved so she wouldnt be as fearful as i was. I was glad to move……

  39. I have not seen any paranormal activity but feel my boys may have. I was laying down with my 2 1/2 year old son. The room was pretty dark because I was trying to get him to fall asleep. He points to the corner of his room and asks “who is that?”. I look in that direction, nothing. I tried to clarify answers but no luck with a 2 1/2 year old. I dismissed it. He never liked the room and by the time we had our second son, our older son asked to move back in his old bedroom because he did not like his current room. So I put our second son in the bedroom. When he was about three, we were laying in bed again and the exact same scenario occurred. My three year old asks me, pointing to the same corner, “who’s that?.” Ok, that REALLY freaked me out. Two toddlers, two years apart asking the same question, pointing to the same corner. I have always felt that room had a “heavy” feeling but only at times. There have been times when I was laying down with my son and just turned around and said “What?.” I just felt such a presence behind me. My older son is 8 now, STILL does not enter his younger brother’s room unless we enter with him. I feel the presence may be gone now, not sure. I don’t know why but I have a very strong feeling the presence was a young male. Someone that maybe had a difficult childhood.
Anyways, love reading all these cool blogs about everyone’s experiences.

    1. That’s freaky. In the bible it talks of mimicking spirits. These spirits aren’t the souls of people who lived before, but of evil angels(demons). Don’t ever try to talk to it or befriend it if you feel it’s presence again. I believe once you die, your soul doesn’t stay here,. Interesting story though.
