John Carpenter wants to make a Dead Space film

Game Informer recently spoke with horror director John Carpenter in an interview where he revealed that he would love to adapt Dead Space into a film because it’s “ready-made”. My initial reaction upon hearing this news was f*ck yes! My mind immediately wandered to his brilliant sci-fi chiller The Thing which is one of my all-time favorite films and if you ask me, John Carpenter and Dead Space are a match made in heaven.

“You know it’s great,” he told Game Informer. “The first game was more – I guess it was like Alien – but not quite. It was a little different than that.”

“I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something’s on board. It’s just great stuff.  I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I’ll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made.”

I’d be on board for a Dead Space film regardless of who was at the helm — getting John Carpenter would just be icing on the cake!

  1. I’m torn. I think I’d be curious to see what he’s able to do, but on the other hand…The Ward. Just saying.

But of course Dead Space is ready-made to be a movie. It’s basically The Thing, Event Horizon, Aliens, etc. I think Gore Verbinski could have made a good Dead Space movie ten years ago, but if I had to pick someone to do it now…….well……I can’t think of anyone at the moment. James Wan? It’s a little different than his usual brand of horror, but I think he could do it justice.

    1. Old-school Carpenter would be amazing but you’re right, he hasn’t done anything inspiring for quite some time. James Wan is a very interesting choice, he definitely knows how to make a horror film. I’d like to see someone like Duncan Jones or Alfonso Cauron tackle a horror/sci-fi flick. That would just be too amazing.

      1. That’s funny, because both of those guys popped into my head. Between them, I’d like Cuaron for Dead Space.

Thinking on it for a few minutes, I think Jaume Balagueró would be awesome for it. He did Darkness, REC, and a few other horror flicks. He’d be able to mix psychological horror with the necromorphs pretty damn well.

      2. Oh, that’s another great choice! Watch, if it ever does happen it’ll go to Paul W. S. Anderson. lol.

  2. Sure hope this turns out great. Dead Space and John Carpenter seem to make an exciting sentence. I’m a fan of both. I admit Carpenter’s recent flops though.

    1. No doubt about that. He seems to have lost his touch over the years but maybe a return to the horror/sci-fi genre would be just what he needs.
