The Sam Mendes produced Showtime series Penny Dreadful has been quietly injecting some solid talent into the show as they have just added two more actors to the cast. Rory Kinnear and Harry Treadaway (above) are the latest to join the recently announced Reeve Carney, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green (below). Kinnear’s character has yet to be given a name but he’s said to play mysterious character of haunting intensity and, in a new version of Mary Shelley’s inspired and obsessed genius, Treadaway will take on the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein. From the floor up Penny Dreadful is brimming with talent and I can’t wait to see how this one translates onto the small screen. Read on to find out who’s who in Showtime’s upcoming psychological thriller.
The series draws from famous works of literature, posing that some of the most terrifying protagonists — Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray, Dracula’s Van Helsing and more — come together in Victorian London.
Carney will play the character of Dorian Gray, created by Oscar Wilde, as an attractive young man who couldn’t age after he sold his soul. Dorian is being described as being confident and mesmerizing, yet somewhat isolated. Hartnett will take on the role of Ethan Chandler, a charming American who finds himself trapped in the darkest corners of Victorian London, while Green will play Vanessa Ives, a seductive and formidable beauty full of secrets and danger. And finally, last but certainly not least, Dalton is set to play “Sir Malcolm,” a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest.
That’s all for now but so far this one is certainly shaping up quite nicely. It’ll be interesting to see how some of the actors tackle some of horror’s most classic characters and to see if they try to bring something new to the table. The Show will have 8 episodes and will start shooting this fall in London and will air in 2014.
