Artist Randy Ortiz takes on the most controversial movie ever made, Cannibal Holocaust

Often regarded as “the most controversial movie ever made”, Ruggero Deodato’s 1980 cult classic Cannibal Holocaust has been brought back to life with a stunning new poster created by Randy Ortiz. I don’t love the film, but man do I really dig this poster; it’s absolutely gorgeous and easily one of my favorite pieces from Ortiz to date.

With his art, Ortiz wanted to capture the fundamental idea behind Deodato’s controversial cannibal film:

A film crew fabricating a village slaughter who end up paying the ultimate price is something I wanted to capture in my poster as opposed to doing a rendition of the straight forward “impaled girl” that the film is most known for. I feel going this route pays tribute to the more underlying story Ruggero Deodato wanted to convey to his audience.

Cannibal Holocaust innovated the found footage style of narrative film making and is known for its graphic violence that sparked a great deal of controversy. In fact, after the film’s premiere, Deodato was arrested on obscenity charges. He was later charged with making a snuff film because of the rumors claiming some actors were actually killed on camera—which isn’t hard to believe because even to this day the film as an unsettling realness to it that is absolutely jarring.

He was later cleared of all charges but the damage was already done as the film was banned in several countries due to its disturbing portrayal of graphic brutality, sexual assault, and animal violence. It’s one of the hardest films that I’ve ever had to sit through, so for that I’d say it did its job.

Ortiz’s print will be the first release for Grey Matter Art, a new officially licensed poster company who are based out of New York. It will go on sale Tuesday, April 8th at a random time between 1:00-2:00PM EST. Get more info here.

If you are ever attacked by a gorilla just sit back and relax while you enjoy the once in a life time feeling of your limbs being ripped off.

  1. Ryan is this the same film that they take an american and put him in a cage naked and raised the cage and they cut his privates off. If its the same it was hard to watch, and if he’s doing a remake omg how can he top all that happened in the film?

    1. Lol. Yep, that is the same movie! He’s actually not remaking it, he’s just the artist behind this awesome poster. That being said, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno was heavily inspired by this movie, so that’s probably the closest we’ll get to a remake of Cannibal Holocaust. That’s probably a good thing though!

      1. Did a guy’s privates get cut off in this one? The scene of that …type that I remember more vividly was in Cannibal Feroux (Make Them Die Slowly) when they tied a guy to a pole (he actually deserved it, he was a rapist and is the one that got the cannibals pissed at the group in the first place)in front of everybody, then not only chopped off a guy’s junk but made a big show out of eating a bite right after. Then used a torch the cauterize the… ok, that’s probably enough detail for you. I saw bootlegged versions (from the laser discs imports onto VHS) in the late 80s.

Ryan, have you gotten to see Green Inferno yet?

      2. Yea, that’s the movie! It’s a tough one to sit through, that’s for sure. I have not seen The Green Inferno yet. Feels like it’s taking forever to release!

  2. I know. ARRGH! I heard that when it played… (now, I’m blanking on the festival, TIFF maybe?) last year even jaded horror fans were shocked at the amount of gore (and I think it was KNB who did it-hope so) and plenty of reviewers said there was NO WAY it would ever get an R rating unless it was heavily cut. If that’s the reason, I can see why they’re at a stalemate. I hear someone eats a live tarantula (well, they fake it… didn’t murder a bunch of poor animals like they did with CH). Not that that’s the scene that the studios balked at, obviously, just thought I’d toss that trivia in there.
