Ever wonder how they blew up that dude’s head in Scanners?

David Cronenberg’s classic sci-fi film Scanners is mostly known for its iconic exploding head scene. That particular scene is so popular amongst the world of cinema that people who haven’t even seen the film know exactly where this scene came from. It’s an epic moment in which a renegade with telepathic powers literally makes someone’s head explode. It’s a magical moment in movie history and one of the many reasons why Cronenberg’s filmography has some of the best films the horror genre has to offer.

So what was going on behind-the-scenes of this insane moment in Scanners, and how did they pull it all off? The answer might surprise you! Criterion’s recent Blu-ray release of the film came with a bunch of really cool special features and one of them was a video explaining how the special effects guys made this famous scene come to life.     Insightful video. I’ve never seen this film. And had no idea this was the movie this scene is from! I fail on all counts!
