Ruben Fleischer back to direct the Zombieland sequel

Get ready for more slow motion zombie strippers!

It looks like the folks over at Sony Pictures have finally decided to get their collective heads out of their asses and move forward with a Zombieland sequel. To show how serious they are about the project, they’ve gone on and not only hired a writer, but they’ve brought back Ruben Fleischer, who directed the first film. Dave Callaham (The Expendables) will pen the script under the supervision of Fleischer.

While this is undoubtedly some great news, there’s still one major question that remains to be answered. Will any of the film’s original cast members return? I doubt it. And the reason is simple; all four of them—Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin—have blown up since the 2009 film. I’d be surprised if they can even get a couple of them back for the sequel, let alone all four. Which makes me wonder if Fleischer and Callaham are even planning for them to come back at all. Introducing new characters into the Zombieland universe opens up a ton of opportunities from a storytelling point of view, so they could be cooking up entirely new characters for all we know. Either way, this is exciting stuff.

Fleischer’s stylized comedic take on the undead was a ton of fun, and although he didn’t reinvent the wheel by any means, he gave us a reason to smile over the shambling brain-eaters once again, which was enough to see his film soar over $100 million worldwide. That’s something.

If you are ever attacked by a gorilla just sit back and relax while you enjoy the once in a life time feeling of your limbs being ripped off.

  1. Yes sir indeed I am mightily intrigued by the prospect of a sequel. Wondering how convincing a fresh batch of city-named survivors might be? I’m all ears!

    1. Same here, man. The good thing about this sequel is that it’s been long enough that introducing new characters shouldn’t be a problem. That being said, it’d be great to see what the original gang is up to.
