Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville has been delayed. But why?

Were you looking forward to the new Amityville film? Too bad!

The Franck Khalfoun-directed sorta-sequel Amityville: The Awakening was due to hit theaters in a few months on January 2nd, 2015. The hype machine officially kicked into gear back in August when Dimension Films released the first trailer, and despite being a somewhat underwhelming first look, it managed to get a lot of people excited to enter the Amityville house once again. So why the delay?

Well, this is where it gets interesting. Apparently—and this news comes from Bloody Disgusting—the test screenings were “overwhelmingly positive”. The problem? Both of the groups that saw the film hated the ending; so much so that it led to an order of reshoots. Essentially, they want them to change the ending of an already finished movie. Yikes. If that doesn’t get your curiosity flowing then I don’t know what will. Was the ending truly that awful that they would delay the film indefinitely, especially after dropping an official trailer? And if the ending was really that bad, why film it in the first place?

This is a rather large wrinkle in Amityville: The Awakening as it will now cause the film to release sometime in the mid to late summer of 2015, much further away from its original January debut. The reason for such a long delay is because star Cameron Monaghan, who no doubt has a huge role in the film’s final moments, is currently filming the next season of Shameless. Meaning, they won’t even be able to start the re-shoots until after the holidays, says the site.

Re-tooling the end of an already finished film is a gutsy move by the studio because now they have no choice but to stick the landing this time around—especially if Khalfoun’s original ending really isn’t that bad. What if the end of the film just didn’t sit well with the audience because it wasn’t the happy ending people always clamor for. There are so many questions but unfortunately we won’t be getting any answers for a while… if at all. This is going to bug the shit out of me…

Anyway, here’s what the new film is all about:

Belle, her little sister, and her comatose twin brother move into a new house with their single mother Joan in order to save money to help pay for her brother’s expensive healthcare. But when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house including the miraculous recovery of her brother, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.

Amityville: The Awakening stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, McKenna Grace, Cameron Monaghan, Taylor Spreitler, Thomas Mann and Jennifer Morrison.

If you are ever attacked by a gorilla just sit back and relax while you enjoy the once in a life time feeling of your limbs being ripped off.

    1. Haha, well there is definitely that! You’re right though, it’s definitely a huge red flag to see reshoots only months away from a release. It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out, though.
