James Wan will direct The Conjuring 2

It was only a matter of time.

Yesterday New Line Cinema pushed The Conjuring 2 from its initial release of October 23rd, 2015 to an undisclosed 2016 date, leaving many to suspect that the move was made to make room for James Wan’s schedule. It turns out that’s exactly what the studio was up to as they’ve just announced that Wan will indeed return to direct the sequel to The Conjuring. While the wait is much longer than expected, I don’t think you’re going to see anyone complaining about the latest addition to what will surely be the most anticipated horror movie of 2016.

“It was during the editing of Fast & Furious 7 that my brain started sparking ideas for The Conjuring sequel,” Wan said. “Taking a break from horror has allowed me to be creatively rejuvenated. I’m excited to tell the story of the next case-file of Ed & Lorraine Warren and expand on this world we’ve created.”

With both Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga back to play Ed & Lorraine Warren under the direction of the mastermind behind it all, James Wan, I think it’s safe to say that we’re in store for another great one. With the sequel moved to 2016, this gives Wan plenty of time to promote his upcoming film, Fast and Furious 7, before diving right into The Conjuring 2, which is expected to start shooting in the summer.

  1. This is really freaking exciting news. Was bummed when he said he was not going to direct horror anymore. Think the film will be a lot stronger and have a much more original feel with him at the helm too. The broader deal with New Line could be interesting as well. Wonder how that will play out.

  2. Awesome!! The Conjuring was so good, I can’t wait to see the sequel. And it’s a good thing Wan is sticking around, so hopefully we won’t end up with another Saw debacle.

    1. Exactly! I’m glad that he’s coming back because the sequel was happening with or without him, so at least we know we’re now going to get the best possible version.

  3. It’s awesome to hear Wan is coming back from non horror movies. I hope he sticks around for a long time because he is one of the best going on in the mainstream right now. I am also glad The Conjuring rights limbo is over with the Warren family.

    1. I totally agree. He’s just too damn good at the genre to leave it forever. The Conjuring 2 is in the right hands now, that’s for sure.

  4. James Wan has done some pretty impressive work, especially for a relatively young guy. Saw wasn’t really my style, but I thought Insidious and The Conjuring were both excellent, and very distinct from each other. I haven’t seen Insidious: Chapter 2 yet, mostly because I haven’t heard anything good about it. Does anyone know if it’s worth a watch?

    1. If you enjoyed the first film, you’ll probably like the sequel. Same style as the first and gets a little crazier. Not as creepy, though.
