Move over Rob Zombie, Simon West is now the guy to re-invision an all-time horror classic in The Blob, which promises 100% more CGI. That’s right, the guy who brought us The Expendables 2 and Con Air has been tasked with bringing the all-consuming alien lifeform back to the big screen.
First of all, I’m not so sure there’s even an audience for another remake of The Blob, especially one that sounds like it’s going to be nothing like the films that came before it. And secondly, after hearing West’s comment, there’s no way it’s going to be a showcase for awesome, gooey practical effects; you know, the way it should be.
“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob,” West said. “The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”
Who knows, maybe with the right mix of CGI and practical effects, West’s version of The Blob could be a surprise hit. For now, though, this one just has “Syfy Original” written all over it.

Yeah … Don’t know about this … Leave it alone I say!
I’d have to agree. Usually I’m optimistic with this kind of stuff. But no, just no.
More CGI?? Unnecessary!
The original is and shall always remain a classic. The Chuck Russell remake was a credible remake and felt like a 50’s film in an 80’s world. This new film? I’m not feelin’ it.
Yeah that’s how I feel about it as well. Both of them worked but I just don’t see it happening with West.
Bring on the blob!
I don’t understand why so many film makers are relying solely on CGI these days. Don’t they watch the finished product? Don’t they see how horrible it looks? Case in point, look at The Lord of the Rings trilogy next to the new Hobbit films. The story is fine, but everything is CGI, obviously so, it was so disappointing. LotR was a perfect mix of CG and makeup, and it really made all the difference in the world. Peter Jackson, of all people, should have known better…
