James Wan is so good at his job that one of the scariest parts of his new movie was something he came up with on a whim, literally towards the very end of shooting, and now it’s getting its very own spinoff. Holy crap! That’s right, the nun from The Conjuring 2 wasn’t even thought of until nearly three months before the film was due to hit theaters, meaning Wan added her into the story with some last-minute reshoots.
So now, just like The Conjuring’s Annabelle, the nun will be getting her own standalone feature film with The Conjuring 2 co-writer David Leslie Johnson penning the script—no word on a director or any other details have been released, so it’ll be interesting to see this one come together over the next several months.
And speaking of Annabelle, the sequel to that movie (yes, that’s still a thing) is due to hit theaters on May 19th, 2017 and will be helmed by David F. Sandberg, who directed the much buzzed about Lights Out. Okay, so now that all the blabbering is out of the way, what do you guys think of this? Considering Annabelle was just a giant, terrible waste of a horror movie that only existed because it could make an easy profit—and it did, bringing in $256 million worldwide—do you think the nun is following a similar path?
The problem with a movie like this is that it isn’t going to have what The Conjuring 2 did, and that’s James Wan. The nun has already been realized by Wan in terrifying fashion, giving the spinoff a rather steep hill to climb before it even starts. That said, digging deeper into The Conjuring universe is never a bad thing (unless it’s Annabelle) so another visit from the nun could certainly be worth exploring.

I have yet to see The Conjuring 2 due to a wacky work schedule. That being said may I remind everyone of when that creepy doll from the the first film got her own movie?
My bad, Ryan; you already reminded us all of the first Annabelle. That’s what I get for reading the headline first and shooting off my mouth.
Haha! No worries, Jmount. To be fair, that’s literally the first thing I thought of too when I saw the news. Ugh, Annabelle. Hope you get to see the movie soon, though, it really is great!
I’m going to try and see it Sunday night.
Yup. The failure that was Annabelle was the first thing that I thought of as well! Haha! The problem I see is that these spinoffs only take one part of a bigger, and okay often better, concept and they are forced to create new material around it. Context is everything for me, and in the context of The Conjuring 2, the nun fit perfectly. I mean, just look at how quickly the news has been announced. It’s hard for me to not look at this as another shameless cash grab. But it’s probably healthier to remain optimistic lol
You’re exactly right, Tom. It’s all about context, and when we see them in small doses (especially with a guy like James Wan behind them) they are so well done and scary. Fleshing that out into a feature film is some tricky stuff!
That nun is so friggen scary. I hope the spin-off is super Catholic and religious! Was the best part of the movie. I don’t know about no Wan though.
Oh for sure, that’s why I’m not getting my hopes up for this one—it has Annabelle written all over it.
The nun was the scariest thing about the Conjuring 2! But if Wan isn’t attached it should be just left alone…
Completely agree with you there! It’d be nice to see Wan attached to it in some capacity but there’s just no way, the dude is way too busy. It should totally be left alone.
On a side note…. Is there seriously an Annabelle 2…..Why?
I know right!? It’s because the first movie made a gross amount of money. The only good news is that they actually got a promising director, so there’s that.
Yes but unfortunately the same writer has stayed on for the sequel….hmmmmm
Yeah, very true. We’ll just have to see, I suppose. The one good thing is that there’s no way it will be worse than the first movie. Like, that has to be impossible… right?
