After its World Premiere at Sundance back in January, Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow has been sweeping through the festival circuit and has since been met with nothing but high praise—if this one isn’t on your radar yet, it should be. The farsi-language horror film looks absolutely chilling and its first trailer is a thing of unnerving beauty, working like a slow-burn that scratches and claws its way until a haunting final shot. I’m getting some The Babadook vibes from this one—minus all the hype—with a mother and child alone, scared, and terrorized by something otherworldly. Looks like a winner.
Under the Shadow hits theaters and VOD on October 7th.
Tehran, 1988: As the Iran-Iraq War rumbles into its eighth year, a mother and daughter are slowly torn apart by the bombing campaigns on the city coupled with the country’s bloody revolution. As they struggle to stay together amidst these terrors, a mysterious evil stalks through their apartment.
It stars Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi, Bobby Naderi, Ray Haratian, and Arash Marandi.
That looks incredible! Thanks for the heads-up.
It really does look great. No problem!
Whoa! This looks like one of those films that grabs you and doesn’t let go. So much uneasy atmosphere – a real sense of foreboding. It looks like this film has impressed a lot of people so far.
You’re right on about that. It’s been doing very well over the course of its festival run, so I’m thinking this one is going to be pretty solid. Loved the trailer!
Digging the new look mate. This looks like a winner, and the fact it is in another language i think adds another layer onto the atmosphere. Glad it is hitting VOD too, this won’t play in Australia at all.
Is there another (non-Japanese) horror film that you could recommend? I can’t think of any!
Thanks! Yeah this one looks really good. I have high hopes!
