Where do I even begin with Stephen Martin’s Dead Hearts—it’s a wonderfully twisted coming-of-age short that doesn’t belong to any one genre and that’s what make it so special. The film is certainly unique, a genre mashup that sees a young boy fall in love and the heartbreak that follows. But Dead Hearts isn’t your typical love story (far from it, actually), and there’s a reason why I’m featuring here on TMR—it’s this woeful little tale full of surprises, and its narrative takes a few dark turns that I think you guys are really going to enjoy.
The film unfolds like a fairy tale, blending the real with the surreal and it’s truly one-of-a-kind. I won’t get into its surprises here (that’s best left to discover for yourself), but I can say that there’s nothing else quite like Dead Hearts.
A young mortician will give his heart away to find true love. A whimsical, gothic bedtime story filled with love, loss, taxidermy, Kung fu, and biker werewolves.
It stars Valin Shinyei, Dalila Bela, Duncan Templeton, Thomas Orr-Loney, and Nancy Bell. Check it out below and find more short films like Dead Hearts by visiting the Short Round!
One of a kind
It’s excellent and beautiful tale.
I LOVED this! It’s like a Wes Anderson/Monty Python mash-up. And the ending was surprisingly moving.
Thank you so much for sharing this. 🙂
Exactly! It’s such a quirky and unique style of storytelling—like you said, very Wes Anderson-esque. Glad you dug it 🙂
