Andy Muschietti’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s classic IT has some pretty big shoes to fill for a couple of reasons. One, and probably the biggest, is it living up to Tim Curry’s iconic performance as Pennywise the clown. The other, quite simply, is the fact that Muschietti replaced Cary Fukunaga, which would be tough to follow-up for anyone. But regardless of all that, here we are with the very first trailer for what is undoubtedly one of the biggest horror releases of the year. Everything we’ve seen up until this point hasn’t quite hit me the way I would have hoped a new IT adaptation would—that goofy picture of Pennywise sticking his gigantic head out of a swear pipe was unintentionally hilarious, and it certainly didn’t give me much hope for Muschietti’s film.
That said, the trailer has a completely different feel to it. Nothing about this is funny or goofy—it’s straight up nightmare fuel as we see Pennywise terrorize The Losers’ Club for the first time. I am now more excited than ever to see Muschietti’s take on IT, and even more so to see Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise. We barely see him, but ho-ly-shit show me no more.
Stephen King’s IT is out in theaters on September 8th.
When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids is faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.
It stars Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, who joins Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Hamilton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as The Losers’ Club.
Just saw this! I agree that they should not show much more than this. I really would hate to see the whole movie in the trailer. I am going to remain optimistic on this one, as let’s be honest, the original is not this classic some are blowing it to be. So, we can only go up from here. I just really, really hope this will not be another jump-scare fest.
Totally with you there! Outside of Curry’s performance as Pennywise, the original just isn’t very good, so you’re totally right. I’ll probably stay away from any more trailers (although I am curious to see how he sounds).
In a comment I made on another blog I said that September can’t get here fast enough. I meant It.
I know, man! Really can’t wait for this one!
I loved this trailer. Can’t wait for the film.
Same here, the trailer is wonderfully creepy!
I have been pretty indifferent about this release (didn’t really ever like the movie), but this trailer definitely has me perked up and ready now – it looks like it has potential, and like it could be dark and scary and really good. Hoping for the best.
Thought the cinematography in this trailer looked surprisingly great. Then I read on youtube the DOP is Chung-Hoon Chung and it all made sense.
