Naturally, following a crazy good month of horror like October is never going to be easy—November (and January) tend to slow down when it comes to genre stuff—but there’s still a few films coming out this month that should have you all very interested. While it’s mostly being dominated by indie films, November has a couple of theatrical releases that look, at the very least, pretty fun. Before we jump into this thing, here’s what I watched in October:

Halloween (review): A crowd-pleasing blast of nostalgia, 2018’s Halloween is a worthy follow-up to Carpenter’s classic that delivers a vicious version of Michael Myers and another brilliant score from Carpenter himself.

Apostle (review): A bloody, hyper-violent take on religion, faith, and mother nature and one of horror’s most original films of the year. A lovely, brutal, and hauntingly gorgeous film from the director of The Raid. Need I say more?

November 2

Monster Party (VOD)

Three teenage thieves infiltrate a mansion dinner party secretly hosted by a serial killer cult for the social elite.

Possum (VOD)

Director: Matthew Holness

Cast: Sean Harris, Alun Armstrong, Simon Bubb

After returning to his childhood home, a disgraced children’s puppeteer is forced to confront his wicked stepfather and the secrets that have tortured his entire life.

Welcome to Mercy (VOD)

Director: Tommy Bertelsen

Cast: Lily Newmark, Eileen Davies, Kristen Ruhlin

When a single mother begins to experience symptoms of the stigmata, she seeks the help of a local priest and nun to help her understand what is seen and unseen.

All Light Will End (VOD)

When a capricious young author hiding a dark secret returns home for her brother’s graduation, she finds herself haunted by the past and tormented by grimly night terrors.

November 9

Overlord (Theaters)

Director: Julius Avery

Cast: Wyatt Russell, Mathilde Ollivier, Pilou Asbæk

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

Blue My Mind (VOD)

Director: Lisa Brühlmann

Cast: Luna Wedler, Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen, Regula Grauwiller

15-year-old Mia is facing an overwhelming transformation which calls her entire existence into question. Her body is changing radically, and despite desperate attempts to halt the process, she is soon forced to accept that nature is far more powerful than her.

The Clovehitch Killer (VOD)

The Possession of Hannah Grace (Theaters)

Director: Diederik Van Rooijen

Cast: Stana Katic, Shay Mitchell, Grey Damon

When a cop who is just out of rehab takes the graveyard shift in a city hospital morgue, she faces a series of bizarre, violent events caused by an evil entity in one of the corpses.

Predictions

What you shouldn’t miss:

It’s slim pickings this month but I have to give the edge to Overlord.

• A big-budget Nazi monster movie set during WWII is an automatic yes from me, and early word out of its festival screening has been quite good. The trailer sells itself, really.

What you should take a chance on:

Most of these movies I’ve heard little about (usually a bad sign) so we’re really taking a shot in the dark here, but I’m intrigued with what I’ve seen from Possum (Sean Harris is amazing) and The Possession of Hannah Grace.

• Possum looks like an eerily crafted psycho-thriller and it stars the great Sean Harris, so that alone gives it a spot on this list.
• Everything that I’ve seen from The Possession of Hannah Grace points towards a generic haunter, but you really never know with some of these theatrical horror releases. So if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, I’d say give this one a shot.
