Horror has never been more alive than it is right now and a lot of that stems from the understated indie gems that come out each and every month. They’re cheap, they’re thrilling, and they’re often some of the best films the genre has to offer. Cheap Thrills aims at highlighting the upcoming indie horror films (and some other interesting movies that come our way) that should be on your radar.
If after watching Mandy you thought, gee I could use more unhinged Nic Cage battling otherworldly, soul-sucking terrors then Richard Stanley has just the movie for you. Based on H.P. Lovecraft’s short novel, Color Out of Space has instantly become a must-see for genre fans. This one checks all of the boxes: Stanley, Cage, Lovecraft, all mixed together in a psychedelic fusion of cosmic horror. Yeah, I’ll watch that.
After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a living nightmare.
Color Out of Space is out in theaters on January 24th. In the meantime, feast on more Cheap Thrills here.
I can’t wait for this one!
Hell yeah!
I’ve actually seen this. It’s an interesting film, kinda feels like it was made in the late eighties. The practical effects are really good … and Cage, well, he dials the crazy up to eleven. Hoping to review it closer to release date.
I’m jealous! Looking forward to your review!
This one interests me. I am a sucker for Nicholas Cage.
For sure. Especially lately, he’s been some very interesting movies.
This looks great, but I’d watch Nic Cage in anything to be honest. 😂
I know, right? It’s awesome to see him doing these weird genre movies lately, though. He’s killin it!
Nicholas Cage looks C-R-A-Z-Y in this film. Looks promising!
I hope it’s on the same level of crazy as Mandy.
Speaking of crazy, I recently saw the Bulgarian film “Glory” (2016), which is a dark comedy that spins out of control. The ending is WILD. Have you seen it, by any chance?
I haven’t. Looked it up an it sounds super interesting, though!
