Horror has never been more alive than it is right now and a lot of that stems from the understated indie gems that come out each and every month. They’re cheap, they’re thrilling, and they’re often some of the best films the genre has to offer. Cheap Thrills aims at highlighting the upcoming indie horror films (and some other interesting movies that come our way) that should be on your radar.
One film that was consistently talked about during its festival run in 2019 was Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stellav’s indie After Midnight, and it’s finally seeing a release next month. There’s a lot of talent involved in this one, including Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring, The Endless) as producers, so it’s not at all surprising that it has become one of the year’s most anticipated films.
After watching the trailer, you’ll see exactly what I mean—it certainly appears bound to not one single genre, showing off its multi-layered approach to horror. Part love story, part monster movie, After Midnight looks like it’s going to live up to every bit of the hype.
When his long suffering girlfriend disappears suddenly, leaving a cryptic note as her only explanation, Hank’s comfortable life and his sanity begin to crack. Then, from the woods surrounding his house, something terrible starts trying to break in.
After Midnight is out in select theaters and VOD on February 14th. In the meantime, feast on more Cheap Thrills here.
