Conor McMahon, the delightfully twisted mind behind the cult clown slasher Stitches, returns for a more fear-focused thriller that gets set in motion after a young couple embarks on a road trip through the Irish countryside when car trouble lands them in a place that few people would choose to visit. With its debut just weeks away, we now have a haunting new trailer that uses shadowy images and a thousand-year old monster to get under your skin.
While I’m not entirely sure what to expect from McMahon’s latest—it has been strangely quiet on the review front—I really like what I see here, as it no doubt looks like quite the skin-crawler. Stitches was a really fun, darkly comic approach to the slasher genre, but here it looks like McMahon aimed for a out-and-out slice of monster horror, so hopefully we get something just as good.
From the Dark creeps up on VOD this April 14th.
Sarah and Mark are traveling through rural Ireland when car trouble strikes. The couple must head out on foot to find any sign of civilization. Eventually they come upon a lonely house – but the man inside is wounded, and when they try to help him, he attacks. Sarah and Mark manage to escape but soon they are confronted by something even worse.
A sinister being has awakened from a thousand-year sleep and it has set its sights on the stranded young couple. Deep within the dark bog, the two are faced with an unimaginable evil, but they soon realize that there may be one thing that can stop the creature: light. As the sun sets and light sources dwindle, the creature becomes more powerful, and Sarah and Mark find themselves in a fight for their lives where a gas lamp or even just the illumination of a single match may be the only thing that can save them.
It stars Niamh Algar and Stephen Cromwell.
